Historical heritage
The monastery of São João de Longos Vales, of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine, was founded during the reign of Afonso Henriques, whose wife donated land and properties to its monks.
Later, in the 17th century, it was rebuilt by the Jesuits, preserving only the chancel of the church from the original structure.
Several rock-cut tombs, grave slabs and sarcophagi from more recent burial structures can be seen in the surrounding area.
