San Lourenzo de Salvaterra Parish Church

Church Historical heritage

It traces its origins to the old military chapel of the Castle of Salvaterra, but it wasn’t until the end of the 16th century that it became a parish centre.  It has a striking Renaissance façade, bearing a small sculpture of the town's patron saint, San Lourenzo.

At the base of the columns of the façade, there are several reliefs of armorial symbols and noble coats of arms, evidence of the Portuguese occupation. Inside, a large statue of Santo Cristo da Vitoria from 1732 recalls the harsh clashes that once took place in this frontier territory and the victory of the Castilians over the Lusitanians.
