CONVENT OF THE ORDER OF SAINT CLARE
Monastery
Historical heritage
Convent founded in 1517 on top of another medieval one, hence the term "enclosed" that endures.
The works of the convent building date from 1605 to 1617 for the south bay and 1748 for the north bay. The style combines mannerism and Portuguese baroque, which are mixed in a visual game with the magnificent bars on the windows.
The convent church was designed by Domingo de Andrade in 1688; It has a single nave with the choir located above it. The main altarpiece is a magnificent example made around the year 1700 by an unknown author.
